Embracing Freedom: Nurturing Curiosity and Growth in Our Children
How Allowing Exploration Shapes Our Children's Future Success
Dear Guardians of Tomorrow's Heroes,
Many years ago, I flew from Canada to sunny California for my nephew’s grand wedding celebration. It was an exciting time, especially for my one-year-old daughter who was thrilled at the prospect of meeting her cousins, aunts, and uncles. She was captivated by the dance music and vibrant decorations.
Amid the hustle and bustle of a house filled with lively guests, however, navigating the space became a challenge for her. I found myself constantly at her side—keeping her from handling a fragile Wedgewood vase, discouraging her from sitting on the floor amid bustling feet, and stopping her from sampling spicy jalapeños from the charcuterie board.
Frustration eventually got the better of her, and in a moment of eagerness to escape, she tripped down a short stairway and fell, resulting in tears and dismay. As I comforted my crying child in a quiet bedroom, surrounded by a few toys, I realized she wasn’t acting out; she was simply trying to explore.
Twin Sparks of Inspiration:
· Guiding Words from Maria Montessori:
“I have observed that the child, on condition that (they are) granted the freedom to work, learns, becomes cultured, absorbs knowledge, and gains experiences that become embedded in (their) spirit.” - Maria Montessori
· Inspirational Echoes from the World:
"Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth." - George Washington
This experience led me to ask, what message was my child trying to communicate at the party?
Parenting Pearls
Gem #1: Children learn at their own pace through experience.
Children are naturally curious. They engage with the world by picking up interesting objects, tasting new flavors, and delighting in novel scents. Each interaction, from observing the sway of flowers in the breeze to the wag of a puppy’s tail, contributes to their education. They explore textures, temperatures, and sounds, constantly absorbing the nuances of their environment. This freedom is vital; without it, their natural growth and learning are stifled.
Gem #2: Spontaneity is key to a child’s learning pace.
Children develop skills at their own pace, driven by an innate urge to progress through different stages of life. This development is spontaneous and self-directed, occurring without conscious goals or direct instruction. It is our duty to respect their natural timeline and support their freedom to grow.
Gem #3: Movement enhances learning.
Kinesthetic learning, or learning through movement, is crucial. Children learn by engaging fully with their environment—feeling the weight of a chair they carry, the texture of a shaggy rug underfoot, or the graininess of rice in their palm. These sensory experiences help focus their attention and strengthen their memory.
